Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, typically resulting from viral or bacterial infections, although it can also be caused by parasites, certain medications, or food intolerances. The condition is characterized by symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and nausea. Gastroenteritis is often referred to as a “stomach bug” or “stomach flu,” although it is not caused by the influenza virus. It can be transmitted through contaminated food or water, direct contact with an infected person, or surfaces contaminated with pathogens. While most cases resolve on their own without the need for medical treatment, hydration is crucial to prevent dehydration, especially in young children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable. In severe cases, medical attention may be required. Prevention measures include proper hand hygiene, safe food handling practices, and vaccination against specific pathogens, like the rotavirus.
